E3 2023 Has Officially Been Cancelled

Well, the announcement that many already suspected would be coming has arrived, E3 2023 has officially be cancelled.

The news came from a report from IGN, who were told from this year’s organizers that the event will not go forward, as had been previously announced.

According to the statement, this year that was meant to be E3’s big comeback year “simply did not garner the sustained interest necessary to execute it in a way that would showcase the size, strength, and impact of our industry.”

It was already an uphill battle for E3, coming back to an in-person event after a few years of cancelled events and one year with an online show that failed to capture the same essence E3 had for years.

Things already looked bleak when it was announced that Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo would each not have an official presence at E3 this year, even though Microsoft would be set to host its own showcase in its theatre across the street from the convention center.

They looked even worse when Ubisoft announced it wouldn’t be attending, and then ever bleaker as Tencent and SEGA were revealed to both be skipping the event as well.

Now that we know the event won’t be happening at all, it is probably a fair bet that Summer Games Fest will continue its efforts in trying to replace the showcase that has been the industry’s gathering place for years.
